How to make a sample slide

Image
Before you can get started looking at samples, you need to learn how to prepare them for slides. This video is an introduction on how to prepare your own sample slide. It takes a little practice!  Adult supervision recommended when handling sharp cutting instruments. Please always be careful when cutting your samples.

How to look at sample slides

This video will introduce you to how to look at samples on slides in your Foldscope microscope. It can be tricky at first. Make sure you have a good light source!  Also, using a phone camera can help tremendously with accessibility and ease of use. Simply lining up your phone's camera with the eye slot can produce great clear images of your sample!

How to use this resource

How to use this resource? This post has some practical information on how to use the curriculum developed on this platform. All of the content is free to use,  and designed to supplement science curriculum with practical applications of the Foldscope microscope. All the material will work with any microscope of course. You are free to copy and manipulate the material in anyway you like (as long as it is not commercially sold).  Who makes these lessons and can I contribute? The lessons have been made the team behind the project . The project has been completed by volunteers and by the backing of the Open Mind Social Innovation Lab.   If you are interested in building lessons for the blog, we are currently working on a tool that will auto-format lessons into our template. Feel free to reach out to eric@openmindschool.org or matthew@openmindschool.org for more information. What global curriculum are these lessons based on and what goals do they cover?  How are these lessons licensed and

How to Build a Foldscope

If you haven't built it already, here is our demonstration on how to put together Foldscope from start to finish.

An Introduction

Presenting: Lessons for Foldscope developed by Open Minds Social Innovation Lab All content is free.  Our Story: The Open Mind Social Innovation Lab is a space where innovators can gather feedback and data on their products in a k-12 inclusive lab school and student voices are elevated in the design and research processes that impact them. We connected with Foldscope , drawn in by their affordable classroom paper microscopes and were one of the pilot locations for their product. With the success of their pilot at Open Mind School , Shein approached the lab with the idea to develop free science curriculum to go along with Foldscope so that educators could more easily utilize the tool.  Why we are doing this:  The Open Mind Social Innovation Lab is housed in Open Minds, Silicon Valley , a non-profit dedicated to disrupting education and building new pathways towards inclusion, equity and accessibility. Every student inherently deserves access to strong STEM education no matter their bac
